OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Senate and Assembly approving a bond, with bipartisan support, to be included on the November 2024 ballot. The climate bond would fund vital programs that support climate resiliency, conservation, air quality, and protecting our environment.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“The biggest climate resilience bond our state has ever passed comes not a moment too soon with over 70% of our state under a record-breaking extreme heat warning. This historic investment in clean and safe drinking water, catastrophic wildfire mitigation, drought resilience, urban cooling, and clean energy will protect Californians now and in the future.

Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas are to thank for this massive achievement. We applaud them for their vision, commitment, and tenacity in ensuring California continues to make progress in our fight against the climate crisis. We also applaud the authors and architects of the climate bond package, Senator Allen, Assemblymember Garcia, Senator Limón, Assemblymember Wilson, and all of the legislators who were part of the climate bond working groups for their unwavering commitment to seeing this bond through and unmatched organizing of their colleagues to get this two-thirds vote.

This is a moment to celebrate: our Legislature giving Californians the chance to vote on proven solutions to make our communities and landscapes more resilient against climate impacts. A chance we know voters want. We look forward to working with state leadership and coalition partners to win in November.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
