OAKLAND, Calif.— “We congratulate our friend and former colleague Assemblymember Anthony Rendon, who was just moments ago chosen by his fellow Assembly Democrats as the next Speaker of the Assembly, with the official vote to come in January 2016. We also thank Speaker Toni Atkins for her impressive leadership, her commitment to protecting California’s natural resources, and her tireless focus on clean air, clean water, and clean energy opportunities for her constituents and all Californians.
“Speaker-designee Rendon is a proven champion for California’s environment, earning 100% on our California Environmental Scorecard. During his first term in office, he authored important bills dealing with water and energy and chaired the Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee. Assemblymember Rendon authored Proposition 1, the $7.5 billion state water bond, which voters passed by an overwhelming majority in the November 2014 election.
Rendon served as Interim Executive Director of CLCV in 2008, when the organization marked a major legislative accomplishment in this arena: the passage of SB 375. This first-in-the-nation law gives local and state officials the tools to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by making housing and transportation planning decisions that will reduce urban sprawl, long-distance commutes, and vehicle miles traveled per household. Rendon also previously served as a board member of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters for a decade. Following his time as Interim Executive Director, Rendon served on CLCV’s board of directors until his election to the State Assembly. We are proud to call him a friend and an environmental leader, and look forward to working with him in his new capacity as Speaker next year.”
ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
